Roof Inspection Houston: A Comprehensive Guide for Contractors
Roof inspections are a pivotal aspect of home maintenance in Houston, ensuring the longevity and safety of the roof overhead. TrueWorks Roofing, a reputable name in the industry, not only exemplifies roofing excellence but provides an instant quote tool to ease the process for contractors and homeowners alike.
Why is Roof Inspection Crucial?
Regular roof inspections are indispensable in averting potential disasters, saving homeowners from costly repairs. They provide a clear picture of the roof's condition, allowing for timely interventions before minor issues escalate into major problems.
Pre-Inspection Preparations
Before embarking on a roof inspection, roofing companies in Houston should have a well-prepared checklist to ensure no stone is left unturned. This checklist serves as a roadmap, guiding the inspector through each crucial checkpoint.
The 10 Critical Aspects of a Roof Inspection
Every roof inspection in Houston should be thorough, encapsulating the following ten essential aspects:
Your Attic’s Ventilation
The first thing your roofing contractor should look at when they arrive at your home is your attic. They look up there to ensure it’s properly ventilated so your attic can breathe. Proper attic ventilation is crucial for the longevity of your roof as trapped hot and cold air can significantly shorten your roof's lifespan.
- Ensure proper attic ventilation to prevent trapped cold and hot air.
- Check for any blockages or obstructions in the ventilation systems.
- Verify the effectiveness of existing ventilation solutions.
Visible Roof Leaks or Interior Water Stains
This one is pretty obvious, but your roofing contractor will look for any leaks that are leaving water stains on your ceiling. Once they know you have a leak, they’ll start searching for what’s causing it. Identifying any visible leaks or water stains inside is crucial to detect and fix any existing problems.
- Look for water stains on the ceiling.
- Identify the source of any visible leaks.
- Recommend repairs or replacements based on the extent of the damage.
Layers of Your Roof
When your contractor first gets on your roof, they’ll check to see how many layers your roof has. If the problem is deemed bad enough and would need a roof replacement, then your roof and any extra layers will need to be torn off. Determining the number of roof layers helps in understanding the scope of work in case a replacement is needed.
- Check the number of existing roof layers.
- Assess the condition of each layer.
- Estimate the scope of work for repairs or replacement.
Condition of Your Roof’s Decking
When your contractor gets on your roof, they’ll take notice of your roof’s decking. They’ll test if it’s spongy or if it’s solid underneath their feet. A solid roof decking is essential for the overall stability and durability of the roof.
- Test the solidity of the roof’s decking.
- Check the firmness of nails in your decking.
- Inspect for any spongy areas that indicate damage.
Roof Vents
No matter what kind of vent you have on your roof, they need to be inspected. For example, if you have gable, soffit, or ridge vents, they’ll need to be checked for obstructions. Inspection of roof vents ensures they are free from obstructions and functioning properly.
- Check for any obstructions in gable, soffit, or ridge vents.
- Ensure the secure fastening of gas vents, especially around gas appliances.
- Verify proper functioning and condition of all roof vents.
Roof Shingles
Just behind adequate attic ventilation, proper roof installation is the second most crucial thing to your roof investment. If your shingles were not installed correctly, you won’t get the full lifespan out of them. During your roof inspection, the condition of the shingles is assessed for any signs of wear or damage.
- Look for nails driven in sideways or nails that hit cracks and backed out.
- Inspect for missing, loose, cracked, blistering, or buckling shingles.
- Check for any other visible signs of damage or wear.
Roof Penetrations and Skylights
A roof penetration is anything sticking out through your roof. When your roofing contractor inspects your roof, they’ll check all the penetrations and, if you have them, skylights to ensure they’re staying leak-free.
- Inspect all penetrations and skylights for proper sealing.
- Check the condition of neoprene pipe boots and other sealing materials.
- Recommend maintenance or replacements as necessary to prevent leaks.
Chimney
Yes, your chimney is a roof penetration but there are multiple things a roofing contractor inspects that merits its own section. They’ll check the flashing, the condition of the mortar, and the condition of the chimney cap.
- Inspect the condition of the chimney flashing, mortar, and cap.
- Look for any vegetation growing out of the mortar indicating moisture intrusion.
- Recommend any necessary repairs to ensure the chimney remains water-tight.
Roof Flashing
- When your contractor inspects your roof, they’ll check all of your roof flashing. Roof flashing is metal placed anywhere your shingles butt up against something, such as a wall, chimney, or in open valleys.
- Inspect the condition and placement of roof flashings.
- Ensure the integrity of the metal and its ability to keep water out.
- Recommend repairs or replacements as necessary to maintain a water-tight seal.
Roof Flashing (Continued)
- Recommend repairs or replacements as necessary to maintain a water-tight seal.
Gutters
- Your roofing contractor should always inspect your gutters and downspouts. First, they'll check the integrity of both of them by making sure there are no cracks or open seams. Then they’ll look for any blockages or restricted flow that could cause debris or vegetation to get backed up. It's crucial to get your gutters cleaned out as part of regular roof maintenance.
- Inspect gutters and downspouts for cracks, open seams, or other damages.
- Look for blockages or restricted flow that could cause debris accumulation.
- Check for standing water, indicating improper tilt, and recommend necessary adjustments.

By addressing these critical areas during a roof inspection, you're taking a significant step towards ensuring the longevity and durability of your roof. And with TrueWorks Roofing by your side, you can rest easy knowing that every aspect of your roof is handled with the utmost professionalism and expertise.

We are very happy with the quality of work by TrueWorks Roofing. We had an unusual hail storm in August, 2022, and needed our roof replaced. TrueWorks was fantastic from the beginning of the process to the end. They pay attention to detail and are honest. Not only did we have our roof replaced, but we had squirrel damage to some of our soffit, fascia, and attic vents. They did all the work, which was so convenient and seamless. They document everything (which includes lots of accessible pictures), communicate very well in person and digitally, and ensure you are happy with their work. At the end of the day their workmanship and quality of materials and really shine. I highly recommend TrueWorks Roofing. (Francisco, Angel, and work team were phenomenal!)

TrueWorks Roofing completed a whole roof replacement on our home (approx 6,500 sqft of roofing). They did a fantastic job. They started the project earlier than originally estimated and completed it on time. Joel and his team worked on our project consistently until it was complete. The company is very responsive, and they provided excellent communication throughout the entire process. Their crew was tidy and efficient. They took care to protect our plants, pool and patio. The finished product looks great. We highly recommend TrueWorks.
